“Let ‘Em In” is one of my favourite songs of all time, and I didn’t even know I had it!
“Difficult” is how I describe my relationship with The Beatles, and Sir Paul especially.
As a Negro child of the 60’s, the Beatles appeared placed in contrast and opposition to The Jackson 5, and Motown in general. I didn’t understand why the Beatles got more attention than The Jackson 5. The most interesting thing about The Beatles to 6 year old me was The Yellow Submarine animated feature.
The Beatles records I now own were ‘inherited’ from friends and colleagues.
In the 80s, after the introduction of the CD, people were quite literally giving away their record collections in migration to the new format. That is how I acquired most of the 60s,70s, & 80s rock & roll records in my collection.
Decades later, I still have not listened to many of those records, including: The Beatles (“The White Album”), Meet The Beatles, Rubber Room, and others.
“Don’t Say Goodnight” by Wings, “Blow Away”by George Harrison, & Double Fantasy by John Lennon & Yoko Ono are the only Beatles related music I intentionally acquired.
[aside: I didn’t realise John was a Beatle until after his murder – but that’s a story for another post]
I just put on Wings At The Speed of Sound for the first time. Delightedly shocked to hear it open with this song I love so much. Content to hear it on the radio now and again, I never sought it out. I’m sure my anti-Beatle bias also deterred me from opening up to Wings. Happy to correct that (Mind you, “Arrow Through Me” by Wings, is also a favourite acquired via castoff of Back To The Egg.).
I’m enjoying “Wino Junko”, as I’ve enjoyed everything that preceded it.
Side 2 opens with “Silly Love Songs” — another gem — which has me excited to flip the record!
Post Flip: “Meh.”
